The people who look after you
Who will be there to welcome us?
Beatrice is our house manager and lives nearby with her husband Mario. She speaks excellent English and will go out of her way to help make your stay enjoyable. Beatrice and Mario look after the land and the smooth running of Casa Poggio. They also run La Casa Nettarina, their organic agriturismo just down the road.
Who looks after the house?
Paola and Luisa look after the house and can also prepare delicious home-cooked Italian meals. For creative weeks, we can arrange for them to stock the kitchen and cook on three evenings during the week, leaving you free to concentrate on your own projects.
They replace Simonetta, who retired at the end of 2026 after 20 years with Casa Poggio.
GETTING THERE
How do we get to Casa Poggio?
Casa Poggio is in the Sabine Hills, 40 miles north of Rome. Fly to Rome Fiumicino or Ciampino and pick up a hire car for the hour-and-a-quarter drive. Late arrivals can take a train direct from Fiumicino to Poggio Mirteto (1.5 hours), but you’ll need someone in your group to pick you up as there are no taxis at the station (a 10 minute drive).
Do we need to hire a car?
For a fully independent stay, yes, a car is essential. For the catered creative-week arrangement, you can manage without one: we can arrange an airport or station transfer, and there’s a local restaurant within walking distance. The walk into Poggio Mirteto is around half an hour, along country roads.
Can you arrange airport transfers?
Yes, we can help arrange a private transfer from the airport or train station. The cost depends on the journey and should be confirmed when booking.
STAYING AT CASA POGGIO
How many people can the house accommodate?
Casa Poggio has four bedrooms and sleeps up to eight people, with two double rooms and two twin rooms. There are three bathrooms, one of them en-suite.
Is there somewhere to work, with wifi?
Yes. Each of the four bedrooms has its own desk, so everyone has a private place to work, with high-speed Wifi. There are also many outdoor spots for reading, writing or simply enjoying the view.
Is the house warm in winter?
We have underfloor heating and a fireplace, with firewood provided. The quieter months are a lovely time to experience the Sabine Hills, although the weather is more changeable than in summer.
Can we go out to eat locally?
Yes. There’s a local organic restaurant within walking distance, and the nearby town of Poggio Mirteto has cafés, restaurants and shops. You’ll be given our booklet of local recommendations for eating out in Sabina – fabulous little places all firmly off the tourist trail.
CREATIVE WEEKS
Do we have to be writers?
Not at all. The house is for anyone who wants time and space for a project – writing, painting, drawing, reading, research... Or just WFH, but in Italy.
Is this a taught retreat?
No. There are no workshops, tutors or set timetable. You bring your own project and decide how you want to spend your time.
What about meals and shopping?
You can rent the house independently and organise your own food – or choose to be fully catered. For the latter, the kitchen is stocked with breakfast provisions and ingredients for simple lunches and suppers, Paola cooks three dinners, and there's a local restaurant for the final evening (this, and wine, is your only expense). You don't need to do a supermarket shop or meal planning.
Can we come as a smaller group?
Yes. Although the creative weeks are designed with four people in mind, do get in touch if there are fewer of you. We can discuss the best arrangement.
Still have a question? We'd be delighted to hear from you. Get in touch and we'll help you plan your stay.
